In many cultures, the octopus is a symbol of mystery, transformation, and creativity. The eight legs of the octopus represent the eight directions of the compass, and the animal’s ability to change its color and shape makes it a powerful symbol of metamorphosis.
An Arizona-based artist, Deb loves the looseness, energetic textures, whimsy and transparency of watercolor batik on paper. Since she has a challenge with shaky hands, this style of art compliments this very well. Her art is featured in galleries and has numerous won awards.
Growing up in the Midwest, Deb has always found very creative ways to express herself within daily life whether it be home decorating, large mural painting or photography. She has studied and worked in Commercial Art and has a degree in Graphic and Web Design. She considers herself to be a self-taught artist and continues to hone her skills.
With watercolor batik, hot wax is used as a resist with watercolor paint. The wax blocks the areas completed with watercolor. The batik process uses a translucent type paper, watercolor paints and melted wax. With this method, there will be unintentional drips of wax and spreading color. These unexpected additions can actually add to the looseness energy of the art.
